Who Should Have Nuclear Weapons?

Should Iran be prevented from developing and having nuclear weapons?  Well, Mitt Romney thinks so.  He just visited Israel where he hanged out with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu.  Romney stated that America should dissuade the Iranian regime from developing nuclear weapons.  Let’s play devil’s advocate.

Of course Iran should be stopped from having nuclear weapons.  They are dangerous, a threat to all citizens of the world.  As a matter of fact, the incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad not too long ago suggested Israel be wiped off the map.  The country openly supports terrorist groups such as Hezbollah based in Lebanon.  Hezbollah has repeatedly attacked Israel.  They’re a theocracy, an Islamic Republic, where religion dominates all government policy.  Their democracy is only a guise of the real thing.  Just look at their last presidential election in 2009 where the candidate Mousavi was robbed of his landslide victory over Ahmadinejad.  Too much power resides in the nation’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.  Woops, that’s a tautology because Khamenei has all the power!  Any nation where they still practice the divine right of kings—the absolute monarch, is too great a risk to have nuclear weapon capability.

So it should be clear that Iran should never have nuclear weapons.  No way!

What states already have nuclear weapons?  There are officially eight nations who have nuclear weapons: the US, UK, Russia, China, France, India, Pakistan, and North Korea.  Israel is an undeclared state who has nuclear weapons.  These nations are the safe ones…right, sure they are.  What I always wanted: safe nations with nuclear weapons!  Why not no nations with nuclear weapons?

Back to devil’s advocate.  Iran, in contrast, should have the right to procure nuclear weapons.  This is the case because they live in a dangerous neighborhood.  Before the downfall of Saddam Hussein, he attacked Iran in 1980 under the pretense of a border dispute.  If Iran had had nuclear weapons at the time, as a deterrence of war like they’re meant to be, then Saddam would have likely bowed out.  Their track record in attacking other states is clean.  They haven’t attacked another nation in the last 200 years.

The greatest motive to attack other nations in the modern era is over natural resources.  Iran is one of the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the world.  They should have nuclear weapons to deter others from stealing it.

What do you think?  Please, let me know.
